Maharagama is a major suburb of Colombo situated between Nugegoda and Pannipitiya on the High Level road. Other towns around Maharagama are Boralesgamuwa and Nigegoda and Pannipitiya. Maharagama is thickly populated and is a popular residential area. In Maharagma are several Government and Local Government institutions like the Divisional Secretary?s Office, Head Quarters of Pradeshheya Sabha, Governmental Dental Hospital, National Institute of Education , National Youth Centre and the Cancer Hospital. Several Garment Industries are also located in Maharagama. The famous Dharmayatanaya, a Buddhist Temple Complex belonging to the Vajirarama Temple of Colombo and , where famous Soma Thero lived is at Maharagama. Of late Maharagama has become well known for the Pamunuwa Market for bargains in textile and garments trade Both individual buyers as well as wholesale buyers and retail shop keepers from all corners of Sri Lanka throng to Pamunuwa for purchase of textiles and garments specially prior to Christmas and New Year and the traditional Sinhala New year in April.
