Colombo District - Kotte
Kotte is the ancient capital of Kotte Kingdom which came into prominence after the arrival of the Portuguese to Sri Lanka in 1505. Since it was surrounded by marshy lands and the Diyawanna Oya, it was considered a natural fortress during the time of the Sinhala Kings. ( Kotte and Diyawanna Oya have been the subject of poetical works of the Kotte Period) At present Kotte is also called Sri Jayawardhenepura, the ancient name of Kotte, It is also considered as the official capital of Sri Lanka. Kotte is just a few miles from Colombo city centre is surrounded by Battaramulla, Rajagiriya, Nugegoda and Thalawatugoda. Kotte is divided into two parts as was in earlier times ? Etul Kotte (Inner Kotte) and Pita Kotte ( Outer Kotte ). Etul Kotte was the inside of the ancient city of Kotte where the King had his palace and was separated by a wall. The outer Kotte was outside the Inner Kotte. Kotte is surrounded by Battaramulla, Rajagiriya, Nugegoda and Thalawatugoda.Between Kotte and Battaramulla is the lake in the middle of which Sri Lanka?s Parliament is situated. There is small museum and a few prominent Buddhist Temples in Kotte. The Head Quarters of United National Party is also situated in Kotte. Kotte is a highly residential area , especially for the higher middle class.
