Colombo District - Avissawella
Avissawella is situated about 50 k/m/ from Colombo . It is in the Kelani Valley on the banks of Seetawaka Ganga. It is linked to the major towns like Colombo, Ratnapur, Kegalle and Hatton by Road and by train to Colombo. Avissawella is the terminus in the Kelani Valley Railway. Clay brick industry has been there around Avissaweela for a long time. Tea and Rubber plantations are also found around Avissawella. Avissawella is very close to Seetawaka , once the capital of the Kingdom of Seetawaka which flourished in the 17th century and was the bastion for the fight against the Portuguese who were in the control of the Kingdome of Kotte adjoining the kingdom of Seetawaka. King Rajasinghe who reigned for a long time with Seetawaka as his capital, is held in high esteem by the Sinhalese for his valiant struggle against the Portuguese. There are some ruins still left at Seetawaka which is an archeological sight managed by the Archeological Department
